If you've been on the hunt for a natural and organic skincare and makeup brand that is committed to only creating products that are good for you, the planet and generations to come then La Mav may be just that.

I'm not one for wearing a lot of makeup, for me, a BB creme equals a foundation and getting ready for a night out takes me ten minutes, max. I want to put it out there that I'm no makeup artist, I'm no beauty blogger, but what I am is someone that gives a shit about what products I put on my skin and therefore in my body.

Your skin is your largest organ, and since it's porous it also absorbs anything you put on it. That's why for me personally I want to ensure that the products I put on my body are ones I can read on a label and understand what they are.

La Mav's founder Tarj Mavi states that "no woman should have to sacrifice her beauty for her health" which is something I can definitely get behind. La Mav takes ancient natural wisdom and mixes it with modern science to create the quality products they do, or as they use nature to unmask your natural inherent beauty.

They have a fully disclosed ingredients list, which you can read here, but in a nutshell:

  • All La Mav products are 100% plant-based

  • They have scientifically proven bio-actives

  • They are Australian certified organic

  • They are Australian certified toxic-free

  • 100% Vegan

  • Not tested on animals

  • Made in Australia

and in my opinion, they are affordable. The BB creme I bought for $35AU which is actually cheaper than previous ones I've bought from both natural beauty and your standard beauty brands in the past.

Behind the Brand:

An interview with Tarj Marvi, the founder of La Mav.

What made you start La Mav?
After the birth of my second son, I developed a severe case of post-partum melasma. I started
looking for products that were safe and effective, but I couldn’t find anything that checked both
of my requirements. This is when I decided to take my knowledge and experience in the
development field and created a unique line of products that are good for the environment,
good for your health and good for the generations to come.

What is something others wouldn't know about creating a natural beauty business that you think they should?
In order to establish yourself as a brand, you have to be transparent about your values and how
you develop your products. Nowadays, the competition on the beauty market is extremely high
and customers are educated enough to distinguish false marketing claims from actual facts. Be
open and honest about everything you do – this is how you build brand trust.
Apart from that, it’s very important to find your unique selling point – what makes your
product(s) special/one-of- a-kind. In our case that’s the scientifically proven bio-actives that we
incorporate – we have solid research data to back up every claim we make about our products
and that’s something customers appreciate.

What has been the most challenging thing you have uncovered since the beginning?
It took me quite some time to understand and accept that failure is natural - it’s part of the
journey. Accepting that things do not always go according to plan is the biggest favor you can
do to yourself – it will save your precious energy that you can later put into giving life to your
ideas and shaping the reality as you’d like to see it.

Within the ethical fashion community, there's a big question that we ask which is 'Who made my clothes?', In the scope of La Mav, who made your natural beauty products? Can you tell us a bit about them?
Our products are formulated and made in Australia. As far as ingredients are concerned -
almost all ingredients and bio-actives we use are sourced from Australian companies. The
reason some ingredients are not, is that they are not native to Australia (e.g. Moroccan Argan
Oil). Our products are certified organic by the OFC, Australian certified Toxic-free, ethical, 100%
vegan and certified cruelty-free. The packaging we use is eco-friendly and 100% recyclable.

Best piece of advice you have ever received?
“Listen to your gut”. I have strong intuition, and it has never misled me - it has always led me to
the right place, at the right time.

One tip you'd give to others who are wanting to start their own business?
If you want to start your own business, choose to do something that you are genuinely
passionate about. It’s a simple rule, but it’s essential. Your interest in the niche you’ll be
working in, as well as your dedication to a certain cause, is the foundation of your future

Where do you envision La Mav in the future?
The brand is growing rapidly – we are starting to expand to the US and the Canadian market.
We already have many customers overseas who love our products and are happy with the
positive results they see. Happy customers are what keeps us motivated to continue creating
beautiful skincare and makeup that not only works but doesn’t harm the planet we live on in
any way.

We are planning to launch a few new products that our customers have been requesting for quite a while. I am not going to say anything else at this point – I want it to be a pleasant surprise. Stay tuned!

What or who inspires you to do what you do on a daily basis?
What makes me get up every morning, and start the day on a positive note, are my kids. They are everything to me. I want them to grow in a cleaner environment, and I am trying my best to do my bit and contribute to making this world a better place for all of us.

Do you have a morning routine? If so, what is it you do to set yourself up for the day ahead?
My beauty routine is very simple - cleanse-tone- moisturize. I try to fit in yoga at least twice or three times a week. Once I am done with my morning beauty ritual, I have a cup of tea with my husband and my kids – on a very busy day, it might be only 15 minutes, but I always try to make time to talk to them.
My family and their unconditional support is what gives me the strength to
keep going forward and to set my goals higher – they are my ultimate inspiration.

One book everyone should read? Why?
The Nature of Beauty by Imelda Burke – great read! It’s a must for everyone who wants to learn more about the eco-friendly approach to beauty, as well as the science behind organic/natural skin care.

Are there any other Movers & Shakers out there in your world that you think people should know about?
I think that everyone who is trying to make this world a better place can be considered Mover & Shaker. Only with collective effort, we’ll be able to see the change. Progress doesn’t happen overnight and it requires the efforts of many who think alike.
